Discovering Creativity: Photography Workshop for People with Early-Stage Memory Loss

Discovering Creativity is a workshop for individuals with early-stage memory loss and their care partners. Diagnosed individuals will participate in a photography workshop where they will learn the basics of taking photos: composition, lighting, and camera mechanics, explore the history of photography, participate in curating a photography exhibit, and write an artist?????????????s statement. Care partners will learn to develop strategies for reducing stress, experience the benefits of journaling and creative writing, and gain strategies for creating a personal support network and accessing community resources. The 2 groups will meet simultaneously. A final Artists' Reception (to be scheduled) will be a reception for participants, family, friends and community guests showcasing the artists????????????? work.

Program Pre-Requisites: Prerequisites
1. Have symptoms of memory loss and/or a diagnosis of early-stage Alzheimer?????????????s disease, dementia, or a related disorder identified by a physician.
2. Acknowledge memory loss or confusion at times and be aware of their diagnosis.
3. Have a care partner or someone who is willing to attend the workshop with them.
4. Be able to communicate with others and make themselves understood even if they can?????????????t always find the right word.
5. Have the ability to focus on an activity and follow directions.

Discovering Creativity is a pilot program which has been made possible by a grant from the Alzheimer's Association. Program participants will complete entrance and exit surveys to provide information that aids in the creation of similar programs nationwide.
